Getting a Visa with a drink driving conviction for America?

My boyfriend was convicted of drinking driving and was banned for twelve months, (the ban is up in march 2008) we are planning to travel to America next year, is he able to get a visa for a weeks holiday? If so does he have to get it before we travel or fill the form out on the plane and declare then?

Also he’ll be 21 when we travel is he able to hire a car a.) because of his age? and b.) because of his conviction?

Thanks :)

If you live in a Visa waiver country, such as England, then you do not need a visa to visit the US for a vacation.

BUT… a Visa waiver is NOT available to anyone who has been arrested or has a criminal record, which would apply to your boyfriend. He will need to apply for a special restricted visa. The link below shows how to apply.

MOST car rental companies in the US won’t rent to anyone with a DUI within the last 5 years, or to anyone under 23… so if he gets his visa you should check ahead with the rental car company.
